When researchers trained ChatGPT to be "helpful," they accidentally taught it to be boring. Here's why: Human reviewers consistently preferred familiar, safe answers over creative ones. Even when both answers were correct, they picked the predictable option. ChatGPT learned to play it safe. Always give the most typical answer. Never take risks. But there’s a simple fix. Instead of asking: "Tell me a joke about coffee" Ask: "Tell me a joke about coffee. Generate 5 jokes and their corresponding probabilities" Those 7 extra words change everything. The Stanford paper called this “Verbalized Sampling”. Instead of "Write a Python function," I asked for "2 different approaches with trade-offs" Instead of "Explain this concept," I asked for "3 explanations at different complexity levels" Instead of "Give me advice," I asked for "multiple perspectives with their assumptions" Here's what I learned: The best way to get better answers isn't to find better AI. It's to ask better questions. And it was my best interview experience ever. The process was unlike anything I'd seen before. No LeetCode-style questions in sight. Instead, all the interviews were pair programming sessions. The interviewers and I took turns writing functions, building something together. It was refreshing, challenging, and dare I say... fun? But that's not the only thing that made this interview experience special. After they decided not to move forward with me, the recruiter actually called to give detailed feedback. Imagine that - a company that values your time enough to tell you why things didn't work out. Let me be clear: If your interview process doesn't include giving feedback, it's broken. Period.
